Tooth Extraction Aftercare Helpful Tips

Having a tooth extracted can relieve pain, infection, or other dental concerns, but proper aftercare is an important part of the healing process. Following your dentist’s instructions can help protect the extraction site, encourage comfortable healing, and reduce your risk of complications. Here are some helpful tips for caring for your smile after a tooth extraction.

Protect the Blood Clot

After an extraction, a blood clot forms in the empty tooth socket. This clot protects the underlying bone and nerves while new tissue begins to develop. Avoid disturbing the area with your tongue, fingers, or toothbrush. You should also avoid using straws, smoking, vaping, or forceful spitting, as the suction can dislodge the clot and increase the risk of dry socket.

Manage Bleeding and Swelling

Some minor bleeding or oozing is normal during the first several hours after an extraction. Your dentist may ask you to bite down on gauze to control bleeding gently. Follow their instructions for changing or removing the gauze.

Swelling may also occur, particularly after a more involved extraction. Applying a cold pack to the outside of your face for short intervals during the first day can help minimize swelling and discomfort. Always follow your dental team’s recommendations for managing pain and inflammation.

Choose Soft, Comfortable Foods

Give the extraction site time to heal by choosing soft foods for the first few days. Yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies eaten with a spoon, and lukewarm soups are convenient options. Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, or spicy foods that could irritate the area.

Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth when possible. You can gradually return to your regular diet as the extraction site becomes more comfortable and your dentist advises.

Keep Your Mouth Clean

Good oral hygiene remains important during recovery. Continue brushing and flossing your other teeth, but be gentle around the extraction site. Avoid brushing directly over the socket until your dentist says it is safe.

Your dental team may recommend gently rinsing with warm salt water beginning after the first 24 hours. Rather than swishing or spitting forcefully, allow the rinse to move gently around your mouth and fall into the sink.

Take It Easy

Plan to rest after your procedure. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting can increase blood pressure and may contribute to renewed bleeding. Follow your dentist’s guidance about when you can safely return to your usual activities.

Know When to Contact Your Dentist

Recovery experiences vary, but discomfort and swelling should generally begin improving as healing progresses. Contact your dentist if you experience severe or worsening pain, persistent heavy bleeding, fever, significant swelling, pus, or other concerning symptoms.

Most importantly, follow the personalized instructions provided by your dental team. With careful home care and a little patience, you can protect the extraction site, minimize complications, and give your mouth the support it needs for a smooth, healthy recovery.
